An Introduction to Status of Poverty in India

  Poverty is a pervasive issue in India, affecting millions of people and hindering the country's economic and social development. Poverty is defined as the inability to fulfil the minimum basic requirements of life, including food, clothing, housing, education, and health facilities. According to the official data by NITI Aayog , 16% of the total population in India was below the poverty line in 2021-2022. However, poverty is not just limited to the lack of income; it is a complex problem that is influenced by a range of factors such as rapid population growth among the poor, unemployment, inflation, low levels of capital formation, education, and economic development, inequalities of income and wealth, and social factors.
